IVF treatment in Australia
Australia is a world leader in IVF and many other forms of assisted reproductive technology. Thanks to our advanced research and accessible funding, more than 3% of all Australian births are now due to IVF treatment. That’s the equivalent of one child in every classroom of 30.
While most other countries have small individual practices or provide IVF treatment within their general health services, Australia has a well-defined specialist sector that continually invests in advanced treatment technology. This allows us to offer our services to patients who live overseas.
- International patients at IVFAustralia
If you live outside Australia, you can still access IVFAustralia’s leading assisted reproductive technologies, such as IVF (in vitro fertilisation) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm injection), through our international program.
As part of Australia’s leading group of fertility specialists we are able to help patients from other countries overcome a wide range of fertility issues. Our doctors, nurses, scientists and support staff work together to develop a tailored treatment plan to give you the best possible chance of success.
Visiting an IVFAustralia clinic gives you access to the best minds in fertility treatment and the latest assisted reproductive technology – and you’ll receive treatment in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Sydney.
- How can I be treated with IVFAustralia
As an international patient you can access our full treatment services at one our IVFAustralia clinics in Sydney. Many of our international patients prefer to receive their treatment at our Sydney City clinic, but you can choose from our other locations around Sydney.
We can also help your local physician manage your cycle from your home city, reducing your travel time to Australia to as little as two weeks for final monitoring, egg collection and embryo transfer.
- IVF treatment costs for international patients
You can expect IVF treatment with IVFAustralia to cost between $AUD12,000 and $AUD15,000 per cycle
However, if you are an Australian living overseas with a current Australian Medicare card the final out-of-pocket cost can be reduced significantly, to approximately $4000 plus day surgery fees. To access the Medicare rebate a referral from an Australian GP that is less than six months old must be provided before you begin your treatment.
Please contact us by email to discuss your situation and the likely costs associated with your treatment, or phone +61 2 9425 1600 during standard Australia business hours.
- International IVF patient program
Our international program provides you with access to our expertise and care, while minimising the time and travel involved. We offer phone consultations wherever possible, and work with your local physician to support you in your home country.
Step 1. Contact with IVFAustralia
Our Public Liaison Coordinator will recommend a fertility specialist and outline the likely costs of your treatment. If you are happy to take the next step, we will arrange a telephone consultation with the fertility specialist of your choice. The cost of a telephone consultation with a fertility specialist is $AUD250, paid by credit card at the time of your consultation.
Please note if you would like to access our sperm donor programme you will be required to come to Sydney for a face to face consultation with a specialist in order to be added to the sperm donor wait list.
Step 2. Phone consultation with an IVFAustralia Fertility Specialist
During a detailed consultation with your IVFAustralia fertility specialist (allow at least 30 minutes), your medical history will be recorded, available test results considered, and more tests may be requested. These might include, specific blood tests, a semen analysis or ultrasound scans. Your fertility specialist will discuss some preliminary advice regarding your treatment options.
Step 3. Confirmation of fertility treatment plan
If you decide to proceed with the proposed fertility treatment, we’ll send you some consent forms and a detailed timeline of your treatment cycle and medication.
A fertility nurse who works closely with your fertility specialist will then contact you to provide further information on your treatment cycle. We recommend a phone consultation with one of our fertility counsellors to help you prepare for treatment.
A typical IVF cycle for an international patient will cost between $AUD12,000 and $AUD15,000. In some cases when preliminary treatment is commenced in your own country, you will need to purchase medication locally in this instance.
Step 4. Arrange travel to Sydney
If you require a visa to travel to Australia then you will need to apply for a Medical Treatment Visa. Our preferred migration agent, Merryl Dawson (phone +61 755103511), can assist with your Medical Treatment Visa application. The following Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship website link can provide you with additional information. https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/medical-treatment-602
We can also help you with travel and accommodation arrangements. IVFAustralia has arranged special accommodation rates with The Waldorf Apartment Group, which has properties close to all of our clinics. If you wish to book this accommodation, please contact Michelle Paulson and advise that you are a patient with IVFAustralia. If you need further information and advice on accommodation and attractions in Sydney, please visit the NSW Travel Centre website.
Step 5. Start your treatment at home
Typically, you’ll start fertility treatment in your home country three to five weeks before your fertility specialist appointment in Sydney. Your IVFAustralia fertility specialist and nurse will support you over the phone or by email as needed.
Alternatively, you may wish to undergo the full treatment cycle in Australia. This just means a longer stay away from home.
Step 6. Finalise your IVF treatment in Sydney
If you have commenced your treatment in your own country, you will then travel to Sydney for monitoring and the final phase of your treatment cycle – egg collection, laboratory procedures and embryo transfer.
When you arrive, you’ll meet your fertility specialist and nurse. They will closely monitor and care for you during the critical egg collection, embryo development and transfer stages. A few days after your embryo transfer you can travel home. On average, if you have commenced treatment in your own country, you should allow for a two week stay in Sydney. In a small number of cases, this may extend to three weeks.
If you’d prefer to undergo full treatment in Australia, we recommend you plan to spend up to three months in Sydney on a standard tourist visa.
Step 7. Ongoing care at home
After you return to your home country, we continue to provide ongoing support and care. We’ll provide a full copy of your medical record on completion of your treatment in Australia, along with a letter for your local supervising physician detailing the treatment undertaken.
Within two weeks of arriving home you will have a pregnancy blood test and then talk with your fertility specialist again. Your fertility nurse will also call you to check on your progress.
Excess embryos not used during your initial cycle may be frozen and used for an additional frozen embryo transfer at a later time, increasing your chance of achieving a pregnancy.
