Michael Costello is an experienced fertility specialist who is also a renowned Australian and International expert on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Michael’s comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the latest research findings across a wide range of fertility issues means he is able to meticulously assess and care for his patients with a highly personalised approach. Michael is known for his honest and down to earth manner.
Michael completed his specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG). He then undertook further sub-speciality training in infertility and reproductive endocrinology at the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) in Sydney and Jessop University Hospital in Sheffield, England resulting in his sub-specialty Certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) by the RANZCOG.
Michael has been awarded further academic qualifications including Masters in Reproductive Medicine (MMed) by the University of Sydney in 2002 and Doctor of Medical Science (DMedSc) by the University of NSW (UNSW) in 2015, with the latter degree being awarded for having made an original and meritorious contribution to medicine which establishes Michael as an authority in the research area of disorders of female reproduction, commanding national and international recognition for his contribution to medical science.
Michael is currently a Senior Lecturer in O&G with the UNSW, and a Clinical Academic with the Department of Reproductive Medicine at the RHW. He teaches and examines for the undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and postgraduate Masters of Reproductive Medicine degrees (MRMed) at the UNSW. He is also an examiner for the subspecialty degree of CREI for the RANZCOG. He also lectures regularly at local, national and international scientific meetings and has written over 60 medical publications including scientific journal papers and book chapters. These academic commitments allow Michael to be at the leading edge of the latest research which he is able to apply to his clinical practice.
Michael is considered a world renowned expert in PCOS as evidenced by his co-authoring of two recent Guidelines on PCOS:
1) the Australian “Evidence-Based Guideline for the Assessment and Management of PCOS” - the first guideline of its kind at the time both nationally and internationally, published in 2011 and updated in 2015, and more recently
2) the first ever “International Evidence-Based Guideline for the Assessment and Management of PCOS” published in 2018. Michael chaired the “Therapy for Infertility for PCOS” Guideline Development Group for the Australian Guideline and the “Assessment and Treatment of Infertility” Guideline Development Group for the International Guideline.
