In response to the media coverage this morning around the issues associated with use of donated sperm at another Sydney fertility clinic, IVFAustralia would like to reassure patients we predominantly use Australian donated sperm. The limited amount of overseas sperm that we use is sourced from reputable international sperm banks where all donors are prepared according to Australian legislation and the tight family limits that apply to Australian donors.  Our Scientific Director has personally visited these international banks to audit their processes, to ensure that our normal quality and safety standards are fully adhered to.

Unlike IVF, use of donated sperm for artificial insemination requires all donated sperm to be frozen for safety reasons and this can affect the quality of the sperm.  As a result, not all sperm donors have sperm that is suitable for this approach.  We will only use donated sperm for artificial insemination where we are completely satisfied that the sperm criteria make it suitable for this approach.

Donor sperm can be used for either intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and we have strict criteria for the quality of sperm to be used for both treatments and sometimes it may become apparent during the assessment process that a person is not suitable to be a sperm donor.

If you have any questions about your own care, please don’t hesitate to contact our team for information.
