Meet the Scientific Director of IVFAustralia, Simon Cooke. His expert knowledge ensures new and emerging techniques are applied to our labs.

As the Scientific Director of IVFAustralia, Simon Cooke is responsible for all NSW laboratory operations. Working in and overseeing the management of embryo and sperm laboratories since 1992, Simon’s extensive knowledge ensures new and emerging techniques are applied to all clinical embryology and andrology services in IVFAustralia, with the aim of continually improving outcomes for patients.

Simon is currently helping pioneer a new Artificial Intelligence technology for IVFAustralia laboratories to electronically identify and consistently select the best embryo to transfer from the patient’s cohort, with the aim of shortening the time to pregnancy.

With an interest in high magnification sperm injection as a method of overcoming specific male sperm defects, Simon has driven automation projects within the IVFAustralia labs in areas such as Identity Witnessing, Diagnostic Semen Analysis, Sperm Selection for DNA-damaged sperm in ICSI, Oocyte assessment and Embryo Culture, and the live-time monitoring of all frozen samples.

Simon graduated with a Degree in Agriculture from the University of Sydney, before progressing his studies to obtain a PhD in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of NSW (UNSW). He is published in areas of culture media and pH, in-vitro culture techniques and the spindle and polarity of human oocytes and embryos. Simon also co-edited the textbook for the national IVF Scientists group, Scientists in Reproductive Technology (SIRT), is a conjoint lecturer for UNSW and a previous Secretary of SIRT.
