Patient Support

Overview

Many individuals and couples undergoing fertility treatment find the experience both physically and emotionally challenging.  At different times, they may feel like there is nobody to talk to that understands what they are going through.

Prior to commencing treatment, IVFAustralia offers free fertility information evenings in IVFAustralia clinics in Sydney and the Central Coast, to help individuals and couples learn more about their options.  View our upcoming schedule here.

IVFAustralia provides professional support for patients throughout their treatment from experienced fertility counsellors.  This support program includes independent advice and support, social and support groups, evening workshops and the opportunity to make contact with other people undergoing fertility treatment in your local area.

Counselling

IVFAustralia's team of dedicated fertility counsellors are all members of the Australian & New Zealand Infertility Counsellors Association with professional qualifications in psychology/social work and counselling.

The counselling team provide support suited to meet the needs of individuals and couples undergoing fertility treatment. Some of the main areas of counselling that we offer at IVFAustralia are:

  • Treatment decision making
  • Coping with infertility
  • Grief and loss
  • Couples and family counselling
  • Crisis counselling
  • Coping with pregnancy loss
  • Donor counselling

Counsellors are available for face–to-face or phone consultations, for individuals or couples. This counselling is included without additional cost as part of the IVF and ICSI treatment cycles (with one follow-up consultation).

For some patients, counselling is mandatory. This is the case, for example, for those either donating or receiving donated gametes (egg or sperm) or embryos during fertility treatment. However, for most it is a service that we encourage patients to make the most of.

Social & Support Groups

IVFAustralia facilitates patient support groups on a regular basis for individuals and couples undertaking treatment with us. Support groups are held in IVFAustralia’s clinics and provide the opportunity to meet with other people who are undergoing treatment or dealing with infertility.

Evening Workshops

Workshops are offered to patients throughout the year. These provide an opportunity to learn about a range of topic areas in a small group environment. The workshops are usually held in the evenings over two hours.

Local Contact List

IVFAustralia patients have the opportunity to list their contact details on their local clinic contact list. This list is facilitated by the local clinic counsellor and allows them to make contact with people in their area also undergoing treatment, for the benefit of talking and sharing information.
