Ovulation Induction

Ovulation Induction

Overview

Ovulation induction is one of the simplest fertility treatments available. It is used in women who do not have a normal menstrual cycle or who are not ovulating.

With ovulation induction, conception is acheived through intercourse.  Treatment simply involves taking oral or injectable medication to help you ovulate.  This medication is taken at the beginning of the menstrual cycle and is monitored throughout your cycle with blood and ultrasound tests.  Through monitoring, we can determine when you are about to ovulate.  We can then advise the best time for intercourse to achieve conception.

Below is a simple overview of a typical course of ovulation induction treatment.

Day of your menstrual cycle: What happens:
Day 1 Call the clinic to arrange an appointment for a blood test.
Day 4 Start taking medication.
Day 10 or 11 Visit the clinic for a blood test to determine your hormone level.
Approximately Day 14 Attend the clinic for an ultrasound test.  This will determine if you are about to ovulate.

For women who don't have a normal menstrual cycle, it may take some time to ovulate.  In fact, it is not unusual for ovulation to occur much later in their cycle (i.e. beyond Day 14).  In this case, you will need to continue attending the clinic for blood tests until this point.
